New Zealand’s new firearms regulator

From 23 September 2026, Firearms Safety and Education New Zealand is the firearms regulator for New Zealand.  

We’re here to ensure licence holders are empowered to keep themselves, their families and their communities safe. We’ll be doing this by:  

Putting licence holders at the centre, delivering regulatory enablement and response, and having robust strategy, governance and assurance.

A modernised Arms Act

Parliament recently passed the Arms Act 2026, repealing and replacing the Arms Act 1983. This updates and modernises New Zealand’s firearms laws following extensive feedback from the firearms community.
